Scientists insist that multi-colored pets inhabited the Australian continent another 5 million years ago. Despite such a long stay on earth, evolution did not affect this species. Yes, birds can perfectly imitate human sounds and pronounce dozens of words, turn their heads 180 degrees and see the world around them in color, but all this will come later. In the meantime, chicks of budgerigars are born helpless and blind. Parents selflessly care for their babies, but sometimes there are situations when people simply cannot do without human intervention.
Mating, laying and hatching eggs
In the wild, animals breed throughout the year, sitting in the hollows of trees. In captivity, pets need help by constructing a nest box. It is most advisable to install it after cold winter days, when procreation is complicated by external seasonal factors.
The house for the future offspring of parrots will take pride of place in the cage, and the female will immediately begin to arrange it according to her taste. As soon as the design decisions are finished, there comes a period of kisses and courtship games, which indicates that the spouses are ready for replenishment. It is recommended to mate pets after they have reached the age of one and a half years, otherwise the cubs are at risk of appearing premature and sick, or even stillborn.
Usually from the moment the nest appears, after 14 to 20 days, the first tenant appears in the house. After the second, the female begins to hatch them. A clutch usually contains from 4 to 12 eggs, and their appearance occurs with an interval of one or two days.
The appearance of chicks
At 19.20 the first newborn budgerigar is born. Subsequent cubs peck with exactly the same time difference with which their shelter shelters were postponed. Between the first-born and the appearance of the last chick, it can take up to 10.12 days, or even more, depending on how many eggs were in the clutch.
But that is not all. To get out, a small bird must break through the shell with the help of the so-called egg tooth, which is located in the upper part of the beak. It is not necessary to say that such manipulations are available only to those kids who are correctly formed, have sufficient strength and energy. Otherwise, the parent will help to destroy the solid walls. She accurately punches powerful beak pierces the dense shell, while at the same time, as they say, "killing two birds with one stone." Firstly, on the horizon the long-awaited acquaintance with the offspring, and secondly, the remains of the shell will go into food for a woman who has weakened in three weeks. Replenished calcium will contribute to the rapid recovery of the female’s body, because for all these days she led a passive lifestyle, absenting herself only 2 times a day, and then out of need. And just hatched chicks need a healthy helper and mother.
In our power, in turn, to help future offspring in advance to avoid unnecessary problems. Tracking the humidity in the nest is not difficult. If the microclimate is dry, then the inner film of the egg immediately wraps around the pet and sticks to it, therefore, at the moments on the eve of the future life, air indicators should be 62-65%.
What do newborn chicks look like?
The spectacle is unattractive. It is hard to believe that in some 20-25 days, such a parrot cub will become an absolute copy of feathered parents. In the first days of life, the chick weighs only 1 gram, but already on the third day the body weight increases by 4.5 times. He is rapidly gaining weight and at the age of one month is practically no different from an adult.
Toddlers appear in the world almost naked, with just a few feathers on their backs, blind, deaf and helpless. Small budgies have a disproportionately large head, long neck and thin legs. Such physiology allows you to arrive only in a lying position.
- About the sixth day, the egg tooth falls off, which allows you to raise your head. The neck muscles become stronger, and make it possible to keep it on weight.
- Weekly pets begin to open their eyes and try to sit down. On day 10, the look becomes meaningful.
- After 11-14 days, the first feathers appear on the nape and wings. The final color of the chick is established by the end of the third week, the feathers of the fly open, and the tail lengthens. Then it becomes clear who is in front of you a boy or girl. After a month, the plumage completely covers the body of the parrot. Early attempts to fly appear after 40 days.
As you can see, small birds develop very quickly in the very first moments of their lives. Therefore, it is so important to support and help them during this period for proper and full-fledged growing up.
Care for chicks
An important role is played, of course, by the mother of the kids. She selflessly guards every cub, regardless of quantity and state of health. Parrot chicks also need the help of a breeder, if any. Doubly care will have to be made to newly-minted parents, providing balanced feed and fortified supplements in time, maintaining home hygiene, comfortable temperature conditions in captivity, silence and much more. It must be remembered that the burden of responsibility for the newborn fate lies not only with the feathered spouses, but also with the owner of the pets.
Natural and artificial feeding
For physical growth and normal development, a small bird needs nutritious food. In the first few hours of life, the chicks are fed with mother’s goiter milk. This is a whole complex of mucous secretions, small digested pieces of food, saturated with vitamins, proteins and trace elements. Then a denser meal is used, after 4.5 days the female treats the babies with incompletely digested grain, which is stored in the goiter in advance. Interestingly, the male also procures grain provisions in case of a lack of provisions for all his offspring.
There are times when for some reason the couple cannot or do not want to take care of the offspring:
- aggression and hostility towards chicks;
- disease of the cub or parents;
- large brood;
- the inability of the baby to eat or lack of appetite;
- the female is preparing for a new masonry;
- death of spouses.
And the question arises, what to feed the budgerigar chick if you are not a parent. Often breeders place the left offspring to another female or male. But if such attempts were unsuccessful, and most often they are impossible, there is nothing else left but to take full responsibility. For artificial feeding are usually used:
- special mixes for little birds;
- carefully boiled buckwheat, pea or oatmeal with a small amount of beet and carrot juice for growth and immunity;
- saturated broth of oats or millet;
- refined malt from germinated grain with the addition of chicken eggs;
Hungry cubs make a desperate squeak, and in such minutes it is necessary to stock up with patience and endurance, because the food intake procedure should be repeated every 2 hours in the daytime and after 4 at night. Dry food begins to be introduced when the bird learns to fly on its own on the cage. The main thing is to know how to feed a parrot chick at home, having the simplest devices in the arsenal. To do this, you need a syringe with a rubber tube at the end or a thin art brush. In both cases, feeding takes place directly in the goiter.
In a difficult period of childbirth, the bird needs improved nutrition. It must be remembered that the health and longevity of small budgies are entirely dependent on the well-being of the parents. Therefore, the diet of a nursing female parrot, in addition to the main feed, must include dandelion greens, sprouted grain, unripe millet and chopped vegetables so that the feed contains all the necessary vitamins.
Creating a microclimate
For the proper development and growth of young animals, not only balanced food is important, but also comfortable external living conditions. Care for chicks of budgies is accompanied by the presence of a constant temperature regime. In the early days it is equal to 36 ° C, later it keeps at around 30-32 ° C. After three weeks of life, it drops to 24 ° C. Now they sell special houses for heating, which will come in handy.
Upon reaching two weeks of age, the budgerigar chicks also need a general cleaning of the house. It is necessary to clean everything from accumulated debris and dirt by transplanting newborn parrots into a previously prepared insulated box. But the procedure must be done as quickly as possible, otherwise the slightest delay is fraught with hypothermia of animals.
Important! The remnants of food or waste products should not be left on the feet of babies. From this, during growth, they can be deformed. Water procedures in a container with warm water will help keep behind the adhering dirt.
Up to 29 days old, the budgerigar is a helpless creature. After a month, the bird resembles an adult, and only hesitant steps and a clumsy flight gives out yesterday’s cub.
When can I leave my parents?
It is the latter factor that serves as a signal that the chicks of budgies are ready for independent life. After 2 weeks, after the first flight, an adult bird is transferred to another cage. It is imperative to send the budgerigar chicks to a separate housing for further pilot training.
Why do chicks die?
The reasons for this outcome are many. Small budgerigars can get sick due to malnutrition, temperature changes, accidentally hit or become a victim of slow brothers or parents.
