- Nutrition basics
To learn how to feed a budgie, you need to beforehand, even before buying a pet. Domesticated birds, unlike wild birds, cannot independently take care of themselves. Therefore, nutrition and care for them rest entirely on the shoulders of the owner, because it is precisely on his correct actions that the health and life expectancy of the pet depends. What can feed budgies and what can not be given, you will learn from this article.
Before you start eating a budgie, it is best to familiarize yourself with the love of budgies. Under natural conditions, on Australian territory, these birds eat mainly seeds and cereals of plants, they can eat buds or branches of young trees. Also, they will not fly by live protein – small edible insects.
But how to feed budgies at home in order to maintain their health? Of course, feeding a parrot whatever it takes, especially leftovers from your table, is not a good option. Such attempts can end in failure: from failures in the coordinated work of the pet’s body to death.
In order to nourish a bird without such complications, you need to know how to properly feed a budgie: what can be given and what cannot. The budgerigar ration should consist of the following ingredients:
Let us consider in more detail what exactly of the above can be eaten by wavy pets.
The food for budgies is divided into two types: animal and vegetable. The first type consists of eggs, fish oil, cottage cheese and other products. The feeding of budgies with food of animal origin must be carried out no more than three times a month, this type of food is considered supplementary.
What you can give birds from animal food and what you can not feed budgerigars, you will learn from the article "Is it possible for a budgerigar bread, eggs and other products."
The basis of bird nutrition
The second feed type of food for a wavy pet consists of many seeds of plants, grains, fruits, vegetables, herbs, berries. The best food for budgies is a grain mixture. It is considered the basis of any bird diet and may contain the following ingredients:
- various varieties of millet;
- canary seed;
- flax seeds;
- nougat seeds;
- rapeseed seeds;
- sesame seeds;
- safflower seeds;
- hemp seed;
- raw sunflower seeds;
- wildflower seeds.
What you can feed a budgie, only you can choose – on the market of bird feed a huge variety of grain mixtures is presented. For example, feed Padovan, Prestige, Kiki, Rio and others.
To choose your favorite type of food for your bird, you must first give it a try one brand. When it ends, another, until you find the one that the pet will not only eat with special pleasure, but also loudly ask for supplements. You can also be interested in “wavy” monocorm – different grains in separate packages. For example, just oats or separately canary seed.
Now we will talk about how to feed a budgie so that it is not hungry, but also does not earn obesity, as well as the quality of the grain mixture.
Daily Grain Mix Rate
A wavy pet should eat no more than two to three teaspoons of food per day or about twenty grams. Young birds can eat a little more than adults, since their body needs energy and the full development that it takes from food.
Make sure that the pet does not overeat – give him a maximum of three teaspoons per day. Do not pamper the parrot. If you notice that the feed began to end in the first half of the day – do not sprinkle the entire daily norm in the morning, but stretch it for the whole day.
A budgie should have regular meals. These birds simply can not starve, because they have a very fast metabolism. Their body quickly digests and assimilates food, so they can not do without it for more than a day. Be careful: pets usually eat grains and leave the husk – do not take it for edible food. Replenish your parrot’s food every day.
It is preferable to choose a grain mixture or monocorm in sealed packaging: in a bag or vacuum packaging. A simple cardboard box or loose feed does not guarantee compliance with the required storage conditions. In this form, food can be spoiled.
Before giving budgerigars the food you’ve got, sprinkle it on a plate and carefully examine it. It should be free of mold, dark spots, traces of someone else’s life: droppings, insects or larvae. The quality of the grain mixture is indicated by its natural color and luster. You can even taste the grains – the edible food is pleasant, slightly sweet.
Germinated grains are not only an excellent alternative to dry food, but also very nutritious and healthy food. Germinated food increases its biological value: the content of vitamins, fiber. Due to this, immunity is enhanced in birds, metabolism is stabilized, and possible malfunctions in the body are restored.
Germinated grains are especially useful in the cold season, during molting, when feeding offspring, when birds lack vital substances. You can sprout millet, millet, barley and other crops.
Carefully selected grains must first be washed thoroughly in running water, and then pour warm water. Preferably all night. After this, the water is drained, the grains are washed again, poured into a suitable saucer and covered with gauze (bandage), folded in several layers. The main condition is that the fabric needs to be moistened and squeezed slightly so that it becomes wet. The saucer is placed in a dark place, where it is warm.
To prevent the seeds from drying out, they must be washed every three to four hours, and gauze should be moistened. But they should not be completely in the liquid. The pet is given food as soon as white shoots appear – after about twenty-four hours. Before serving, you need to rinse them again and dry well. You can store sprouted grain in the refrigerator, but not more than two days.
Now consider what the budgies eat except for the food.

Yummies for birds
Opinions of experts about the usefulness of these sweets differ. Some believe that birds can be poisoned by such a delicacy, since it is not known what the sticky part of the stick consists of. Others claim that thanks to these sticks, the bird will be in good physical shape. After all, to eat, she will have to try pretty hard.
Is it possible to give them to budgies only for you. If in doubt, then you can buy millet or chumizu on a branch as a treat.
In addition to food, parrots must be given branch food. Tree branches are needed not only to care for the claws and beak of the pet. They are also an element of complete bird nutrition, containing fiber and various trace elements.
Fruit, birch, alder, aspen, maple branches are suitable for poultry. Before the pet begins to regale itself with a twig, it must be disinfected with boiling water.
Porridges for budgies contain vital substances (trace elements) that can restore impaired metabolism in birds. To prepare porridge, buckwheat, beans, rice and other cereals are used, together or separately, with the addition of legumes, chopped fruits or vegetables.
You need to cook porridge only on a water basis, without salt and sugar. Store prepared food in the refrigerator for no more than two days.
The bird should always have clean water. It must be changed periodically so that it remains suitable for drinking. The pet should not be poured with raw water, boiled or with gases. It is best to use filtered or bottled water with potassium, magnesium and sodium. You can add lemon juice, boiled chamomile or dogrose to it.
Wavy can also be given freshly squeezed fruit or vegetable juices. Juices for young children are also suitable for wavy pets, the main thing is that sugar is not included in their composition. Such juices must be diluted with water. However, this drink has one drawback – it can not be in a bird’s drinker for a long time, as it quickly deteriorates.
