Without hesitation, is it possible for a budgerigar to bread or other flour products, many owners feed their pets with them. This often affects the work of the bird’s stomach and other vital organs. A domesticated bird cannot decide for itself what and how much it has. Monitoring her diet is the responsibility of the owner. In this article, we will consider what products can be given to a budgie, and which is better to refuse.
Protein feed is used as an additive to the main food (grain mixture, fruits, vegetables) to make up for the lack of certain vitamin-mineral substances in the body of budgerigars.
It is necessary to give birds products of animal origin about two to three times a month. During molting, during nesting and when feeding offspring, you need to feed your pets with proteins much more often – almost every day. The following foods are included in protein feed:
- egg – a high content of vitamins A, D, E, K and trace elements: phosphorus, chlorine, iodine and others;
- fish oil – a source of vitamins, iodine, phosphorus;
- cottage cheese – rich in vitamins and various trace elements: magnesium, calcium, iron and others.
It is best to give a chicken to a budgie; it is easier to digest. It must be hard-boiled. To do this, it must be kept in boiling water for about eight minutes. Then the boiled egg is freed from the shell and crushed with a fork or tinder on a grater.
The bird can be given the resulting dish either in this form, or mixed with grated vegetables. For example, with carrots or beets. To make the mixture crumbly, a small amount of semolina is added to it. Some birds like to add some food to their eggs. No salt!
A fish oil is given to a parrot only if it has a severe calcium deficiency in the body. It is sold in pharmacies both in its natural form and with the addition of vitamins A, D. This product requires certain storage conditions: not more than ten degrees of heat. Therefore, it must be stored in the refrigerator. Remember – if you purchased a bottle with fish oil, then its contents after opening deteriorate (oxidize) in two to three days.
If you doubt whether curd can be parrots, you know – only low fat. Moreover, it must be fresh. If the curd is not crumbly, add a small amount of semolina to it. Before serving, always try the cottage cheese to taste – a sour product can poison a pet.
Also, budgerigars are sometimes given flour worms and gammarus (a small amphipod crustacean) in the form of protein top dressing. In the wild, these birds sometimes enjoy treating with various small insects, which is why such a protein feed will be beneficial for them at home.
When preparing products of animal origin, several nuances must be taken into account. Firstly, it is a rapidly deteriorating food, especially in the hot season. Therefore, you need to pour food for one feeding and clean it after a while, if the parrot has not finished eating. Otherwise, the pet may be poisoned. Secondly, there must be a separate feeder for protein feed.
We talked about the main plant feed (grain mixture) in the article “Nutrition for the budgerigar”. However, grain is not the only plant product given to these pets. For example, they can cook porridge. This is a great complementary food that can be part of your daily bird diet.
For cooking, such cereals as peas, beans, millet, oatmeal, buckwheat, rice and others are suitable. To properly cook porridge, you must be guided by two rules:
- boil only in water;
- You can not add salt, sugar, any oil or seasonings.
So that budgies can eat differently, it is best to make several cereals separately, and then mix them. You can cook such food in different ways, but when it is slightly undercooked, it turns out to be friable. In this form, the bird is easier to eat – porridge does not stick to the beak. Grated vegetables, fruits, finely chopped greens are added to such a meal.
It is necessary to store the cooked product in the refrigerator for no more than two days or in the freezer for a longer period, defrosting it in parts. Do not thaw porridge parts in the microwave, only naturally – first several hours on a shelf in the refrigerator, then indoors until completely defrosted.
You can also occasionally give a parrot bread in small quantities. However, not all bread is edible for a wavy pet. Eliminate rye bread from your diet. It is too sticky, and if the crumb accumulates in the goiter of the pet, the body is unlikely to be able to push it into the stomach and digest it. This state of affairs often leads to the death of the bird.
But white bread can be suitable as bird food. But you should not get carried away – in its composition there are such harmful ingredients for the parrot as salt, sugar and yeast. It is best to dry crackers from white bread, crush them and add a little, for example, in an egg-beetroot mixture. Also, sometimes you can pamper your favorite bird with fresh sweet pastries. But just a little bit, from a sweet parrot becomes hyperactive.
When feeding a budgerigar, be sure to consider the fact that its body is not intended for many products familiar to us. After all, poultry digestion is mainly aimed at processing various grains. Here is a list of products that categorically can not be given to wavy pets because of the high content of harmful substances:
- milk (cream);
- cheese (especially salty);
- alcoholic drinks;
- fried foods;
- fatty foods;
- salty foods;
- sweet foods;
- sausage (sausages);
- meat – in rare cases, a parrot can be given a slice of boiled chicken;
- fruits: avocado, mango, papaya, persimmon;
- seeds of apples, pears;
And what does your parrot like to eat?
