Is It Possible To Feed Parrots With Millet Porridge For Budgerigars

Parrot porridge

To enrich the diet of parrots, many owners use porridge. Usually they are cooked by cooking, but cereals are also steamed. For steaming, a thermos is used, into which cereals are poured and poured with boiling water. Cereals are steamed in a similar manner for several hours. With any cooking method, sugar, salt, milk and other additives for human taste cannot be added to porridge. You can improve the taste by flavoring the dish with honey, take half a teaspoon of any honey for one tablespoon of porridge.

The porosity of porridge depends on the preferences of your pet. If your parrot loves porridge in the form of jelly, then add more liquid during cooking. If he pecks with great pleasure friable porridge, then cook it until the liquid is completely evaporated.

For the preparation of cereals, the use of beans, soybeans, peas, barley groats, rice, small river, corn grits, oat groats, barley, wheat and lentils is allowed.

The most useful for parrots are cereals made from barley and corn grits, buckwheat, rice. They are rich in micro and macro elements, vitamins, do not contain glutein protein and are adsorbents that have a beneficial effect on the liver of the bird and gastrointestinal tract.

Cooking porridge

The duration of the porridge preparation depends on the cereal. Buckwheat and oatmeal porridge are most quickly boiled. It is enough to bring to a boil and turn off, leaving to steam for another 20-30 minutes. Millet is boiled for 10-15 minutes. More time requires corn, pearl barley and rice porridge.

Parrot porridge can be cooked from one type of cereal, or by combining several different cereals. Using various combinations of cereals, owners get the opportunity to diversify the diet of poultry.

For the same purpose, various “fillers” are added to the porridge, while the porridge must cool. As additives, you can use vegetables, chopped fruits or dried green leaves. For budgerigars, a combination of rice sesame, sweet red pepper, a home-made mixture of dried herbs Padovan MelodyMix (a mixture of meadow grass seeds) or grated fresh beets sesame is a good combination of fresh porridge. Porridge cooked from pearl barley, millet and red lentils.

Storage of cooked cereals

The finished dish can be stored in the refrigerator, in the freezer. Before feeding, the necessary portion is taken out of the chamber and thawed. If “fillers” are added to the porridge, then they do it after defrosting, that is, the porridge itself is frozen, and not fruits, herbs or vegetables. If the porridge is thawed in the microwave, it will lose friability and become sticky. When feeding porridge should have room temperature or be slightly warm. It is forbidden to feed a parrot with cold or hot cereals.

Since the taste sensations in birds are sufficiently developed, it is necessary to pay attention to the behavior of the pet after, before and during meals.

Did you know? Ara parrot can fly about 750 km in one day under extreme conditions!

If the pet will eat actively and then will be energetic and cheerful, then this mixture is quite suitable. As for millet, very often it makes up 50% of the cereals in the mixture, since it contains many trace elements that are necessary for the parrot.

The benefits include:

  • the product is high in calories, so birds grow quickly and strengthen the body;
  • plumage and down layer improves;
  • improves the functioning of the digestive system;
  • contains vitamins B and E;
  • many micro and macro elements, such as phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron.

But there are also negative points:

  • with improper preparation, the product is oxidized, and this, on the contrary, complicates the work of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • may be bitter if stored improperly;
  • excess of this cereal can lead to weight gain.

The use of millet is advisable, unless the bird refuses to eat it or it does not have intolerance to this type of porridge.

There are several ways to feed millet in the form of cereals:

  1. Grinded – this is when the grain is completely cleaned from the flower film, the germ, the seed fruit shells. It looks very attractive, but for a bird it is already of less value than untreated grain.
  2. Millet dranets is when the grain is peeled only from the flower film, it is also not as useful as possible, but it can be added to the feed.
  3. Crushed – when the groats are finely chopped, it is used for liquid cereals. Such millet is the most useful of the possible methods of serving.

Important! A large amount of peeled millet can lead to overweight in birds!

That is, in general, this is a very useful cereal, which is recommended to be added to the food of a parrot.

In the form of porridge

Cooked millet groats are already much more easily perceived by the poultry organism and completely allow to assimilate all the important elements. To properly prepare the porridge, you must first rinse it thoroughly, then pour boiling water for 10 minutes and then boil until it disintegrates.

  2. Rice – is a dietary product that helps get rid of excess fluid, for example, when the bird has problems with stool. It also contains a large number of macro- and microelements – potassium, phosphorus, zinc.

For 30 liters of porridge, we put about 15-20 chili peppers, but in principle you can’t spoil the porridge with pepper. Cinnamon, approximately, leaves a standard bag for all the porridge, add it when cooking rice.

All legumes contain so-called anti-nutritional substances, i.e. substances that slow down the digestion of food or its absorption. A plant needs these substances to protect seeds from those who wish to eat them for free. The known effect of excessive consumption of peas is associated with this. These substances. trypsin inhibitors (this is such a digestive enzyme, digests proteins), and hemagglutinins. In the bulk of legumes (peas, chickpeas, and so on) they are contained in scanty amounts and do not interfere with digestion, unless the person has overeaten. But in soybeans (soybeans. Champion in trypsin inhibitors) and red beans, Lim beans, there are a lot of them in order to have a negative effect. Fortunately for us, during heat treatment these substances are destroyed. Soya finished products (tofu, cottage cheese, milk, etc.), canned beans, etc. for humans (only soy products can be used for poultry, canned foods cannot be used for other reasons) are safe. they have already undergone sufficient heat treatment. But raw beans need to be soaked, preferably at night, and then cook, and according to studies, 10 minutes is not enough. honestly measure everything, then you need to cook in a pressure cooker for an hour or two. In principle, in my opinion, it is not necessary to bring the processing of these beans to fanaticism, but it is advisable to keep in mind that if you give it, then cook for a longer time.

We prepare each component separately. Cook wheat, beans and pasta. And the rest is steamed in thermoses, they are visible in the first photo. The most important thing is not to digest, to catch the moment when I almost had a chance, but it comes with experience. If successfully prepared and nothing is digested, then the porridge is friable.

Together with porridge, we definitely put about the same amount of different vegetables and fruits.

We have prepared all the ingredients and now you have a question: where to start, how to mix? Here is the answer: 1 cup of a mixture of grains of various cereals 1 cup of cooked pasta 1 cup of rice. Mix it all with: Broccoli. Do not thaw with the contents of a small packet of frozen sweet peas. Do not thaw with the contents of a small packet of sweet corn. Slightly dried sunflower seeds. Diced nuts (additives of seeds and nuts may be relevant for conservative birds, whose diet is poor in ingredients, especially at the initial stage training for complex mixtures – approx. Helen T) Cranberries, blueberries, cherries (dried or frozen – do not thaw) A small amount of mango, papaya (dried whether frozen – not defrosted) mixture of legume (singly welded) with a few crumbled garlic cloves or a small amount of green or red hot pepper, not too finely chopped. Done!

In the evening, if something remains, we throw it away.

All the remaining porridge is frozen and for feeding we take out a portion for a day from the freezer. We defrost it this way: in the evening we transfer it from the freezer to the compartment of the fruit refrigerator, and in the morning before dinner it warms up on the table to room temperature, it is bad to defrost in the oven and microwave, because friability is lost.
