The necklace parrot, or its second name, the ringed one or the Cramer parrot, was first discovered on two continents at once, these are Asia and Africa. They nest in the crowns of trees high above, therefore they rarely descend to the ground for safety reasons. By their nature they are very careful, freedom-loving and independent birds.
Most of the day (daylight hours) is spent on trees, hollows, and in the evening they are selected in search of provisions. In flocks, they can raid farm land, causing some harm to humans.
Externally, necklace parrots differ from their relatives in the stepped tail shape and the presence of a black strip on the neck from the sides and from the bottom, and in the upper part of the neck it is pink. Thanks to her, this species got its usual name. necklaces. However, females and young chicks do not have it (we will talk about this a bit later).
Also, these parrots have a bright green plumage with brown spots in the upper parts of the wings and a strong beak of red color. At the moment, other color variations of the species have been deduced.
Necklace parrots are medium in size. Having reached adulthood, the parrot can be 58 cm long, with more than half taking up the tail. They have rather weak and small paws, which is why when moving on the ground they use a strong beak for additional support.
Also, it is worth noting the nature of the voice. The cry of these parrots is quite loud and not pleasant, consider this when buying. However, the habit of screaming can be partially weaned.
Despite the love until independence, it is not difficult to tame a necklace parrot, provided that you have taken it as a chick. It is at a young age, from 7 weeks, when they leave their nest and do not need parental care, it is worth acquiring a necklace parrot. Childhood lasts up to 3 years, then the parrot is considered to be fully adult, and as practice shows, it loses interest in learning to speak, it is difficult to tame to a person.
However, if you take a little chick, he is easily tamed and learns to practice onomatopoeia. In the literature, cases are described when a parakeet learned up to 100 words, when a regular vocabulary consists of 10-20 words or short sentences. Therefore, you need to deal with the bird from an early age.
In food, necklace parrots are not picky, you can feed the products of other parrots. The basis of the diet is a grain mixture: 40% millet 20% oat grains 15% wheat 10% canary and 10% sunflower seeds, 5% fruits and vegetables.
It is possible to contain necklace parrots both in cage conditions, preferably larger in size, and in an aviary. In the latter case, this is necessary if you have the intention of breeding them. In nature, these parrots are excellent flyers who love space, so it is recommended to purchase a cage of medium, and preferably large sizes, more often let fly around the room.
Take care that the cage, or the aviary, is made of strong all-metal rods. After all, it’s not difficult for a parrot to take apart not strong construction with its beak.
For breeding, you need to get an aviary at least 2 meters long. At the top, put a nest with a volume of 30x30x50 cm. You can make a house from wooden boards yourself or, best of all, use a hollow wood log. As litter, you can pour wood dust.
Often there are difficulties with the selection of a pair.
In the clutch, usually from 2 to 4 eggs, which the female incubates for 23-24 days. At this time, the male takes care of protecting his family and provides food.
After birth, the chicks are still in the nest, up to 7 weeks old, together in the mother. The color of the chicks is more dull than in adults and does not have a characteristic “necklace” on the neck. At the age of one and a half years, young parrots have brown spots in the upper part of the wings, and a strip on the neck appears only in males at the age of 3 years.
How to determine the gender of a parakeet
Based on the foregoing, it can be concluded that up to 3 years old, female and male chicks are very similar in appearance, it is quite difficult to distinguish them from each other. At the age of 3, males have a strip in the form of a necklace or tie on their neck; females do not have this at all.
A parakeet can be a great poultry, give a lot of pleasant emotions every day!
