To consider that the care and maintenance of a necklace parrot consists only in the creation of comfortable conditions and the organization of food will be a mistake. These, of course, are very important points, but do not forget about the domestication of the bird and its upbringing. You also need to take time to prevent various diseases and daily communication with your pet. Only the fulfillment of the full set of necessary requirements will bring joy to both you and the pet.
Small cage and aviary
The necklace (ringed) parrot is considered one of the most unpretentious birds that can be kept at home. But this does not mean that nothing is required from the owner. The first thing he should do is to prepare a home for the pet, that is, a cage and an enclosure for walking.
The minimum cage size for one parrot is 0.7 m high and 0.5 m wide and length. But this is not the best option. In such a small house, the pet can only eat and sleep. But he needs to move. To do this, you must additionally have an aviary. It is a platform with a fixed stand, where the poles are placed and the feeders are fixed.
You can limit the flight distance using a special leash or chain. It is necessary to take a parrot for a walk every day so that the pet trains muscles in motion.
Attention and communication
If you get a large cage, then it will fit as an aviary, where the pet can fly. Good size: width – 0.6 m, length – 1 m, height – 1.2 m. Choose a cage with horizontal rods, then it will be more convenient for a parrot to cling to them.
The new tenant needs some time to get comfortable. It will take three to four days. After that, begin to teach the parrot to take food from his hand. Slowly and carefully you need to put your hand in the cage with a treat and patiently wait for the pet to take it.
Each time the palm should be positioned further from the parrot. As a result, he will be forced to sit on his hand to peck a treat. At the same time, you need to talk with him quietly and gently, while giving you the opportunity to get used to human speech.
These actions are an indispensable process in creating comfortable conditions for the life of a parakeet, which requires daily communication.
Four ways to swim
The organization of bathing is very important in the process of caring for a necklace. There are several ways to do this. You can use the spray gun and spray the pet through the bars of the cage. The second way, when a special bathtub filled with water is placed inside. Third – a cage with a parrot is taken out to the bathroom and showered. And finally, aerobatics: the parrot is transferred to the bathroom without a cage (on the arm) and takes a shower with pleasure.
It is necessary to accustom a pet to any of the proposed methods and do it extremely carefully so as not to permanently turn him away from water procedures. After all, they are very useful for health, help maintain a good state of plumage, and when properly tamed, they give true pleasure to the necklace parrot.
Cleanliness and hygiene are important components of care, so do not forget to not only bathe your pet, but also clean its cage daily.
Seasoned but heat-loving
When keeping necklace parrots at home, you should know that they can withstand low temperatures to zero degrees, despite the fact that they come from warm countries. But this does not mean that the pet should live in the cold. In the room where the cell will be installed, try to maintain warm air – 20-24 degrees, with a humidity of 40-70%.
The necklace of a parakeet is divided exactly in half. One half is day and the other night. Keep this in mind and maintain the right balance. In winter, use the backlight, and in summer, shorten the day by covering the cage with dark cloth.
Remember to provide the interior of the cage. Be sure to need feeders and a drinking bowl, where there will always be clean water. The necessary attributes are twigs, all kinds of perches, rope with knots, cubes, toys.
Cooking a Grain Blend
The main food for necklace parrots is grain. But they need to be fed not with a separate species, but with a prepared mixture. As a percentage, half of the total volume should be millet. It comes in many varieties, but necklaces prefer white, which is larger than red or gray. However, more beneficial vitamin A is found in red millet. As a basis, you can use canary seed, which is no less useful.
About 30% of the total volume of the mixture is oats. The remaining 20% are seeds of sunflower, rapeseed, lettuce and wild plants, such as plantain.
It is better not to include corn in the grain mixture, since in dry form it is very hard and does not particularly attract a pet. But the beneficial substances contained in this plant (vitamin B, protein, phosphorus, mineral salts) are necessary for the health of the parrot.
Sources of Protein and Calcium
Before use, corn kernels need to be soaked. Better yet, give young unripe cobs when their grains are still filled with milk. You can also crush them, making them smaller. Grains of wheat and barley should be germinated. Necklace parrots enjoy fresh young sprouts.
Boiled porridge from buckwheat, millet or rice is useful for nutrition. They can be boiled in milk and water. To maintain vitamin D in the body, it is convenient to add fish oil to them. This is usually done in the winter or during the acquisition of offspring.
Do not forget to include ants and flour worms eggs in the parrot menu. It is a source of protein. Hard-boiled chicken eggs are also suitable. To replenish calcium, offer your pet cottage cheese and slices of bread moistened with milk.
Proteins of animal origin, boiled fish and insects give, but in a limited amount.
Fruits and vegetables: peel, cut, chop
The necessary supply of vitamins, necklace parrots get from fruits. Apples, bananas, pears, peaches can be given to them in any quantity, but not put in excess in the feeder, because they can quickly deteriorate. It is better to plant fresh sliced fruits every day. Of these, it is necessary to remove the bones, because they contain toxic substances.
Oranges, lemons and other types of citrus should be peeled. The essential oils contained therein can harm the pet.
From vegetables, you can give cabbage, beets, carrots, zucchini. For a parakeet, it’s best to make a nutritious mixture of them by grating and adding crushed crackers. Cottage cheese and crushed insects, but previously dried, will not be superfluous in this dish. This mixture is enough to feed the parrot twice a week.
Raspberries, strawberries and other berries, boldly let’s parrot. They are all very helpful. Still necklaces love aronia and grapes. In winter, you can replace fresh fruits and berries with dried ones. Only before feeding they need to hold for some time in water, so that they become soft.
Of nuts, preference is given to walnuts. They like parrots peanuts and hazelnuts. If you teach your pet to eat chestnuts and acorns, you will get some savings in the budget, as you can harvest them yourself. All of these solid fruits should be chopped.
It is best not to include meat at all in the diet of a parakeet. This is too heavy a product. But if there is a special need, then it is better to replace it with boiled beef liver.
During nesting, it is useful to give a mixture, which includes:
- chopped chicken eggs;
- decoy or bran;
- bone flour;
- cottage cheese;
- crushed bloodworm.
The normal functioning of the digestive system of parrots requires the presence of inedible substances. They should be given at least once every two weeks. The content of the approximate mineral dressing is shown in the table:
Of these components, you can make special briquettes. Dilute the prepared dry mixture with water to a thick slurry. Lay out on a smooth sheet, giving the shape of a plate 1 cm thick. From above, make indentations in the form of horizontal and vertical stripes. The pieces will easily break off when the plate dries. For convenience, insert an iron hook into the center of each cell, for which the briquette can be suspended in a cage.
The daily rate of products is best determined independently by the selection method, because the number is individual for each parrot. Make sure that the pet completely eats the offered foods throughout the day. If this does not happen, then it is worth reducing portions.
Create a safe environment
When caring for a parakeet, be aware that the more often the pet flies, the better. Therefore, after he learns to boldly sit on your hand, you can let him fly around the room. Remember that the most basic things can become dangerous for a parrot. For example, an ordinary door, if he sits on top, and someone suddenly closes it sharply. Not having time to react, the pet risks serious injuries.
Harmful products left on the table and accessible indoor plants that may be poisonous pose a serious threat to the parrot. Therefore, letting the pet out for a walk, be sure to close the window window so that it does not fly out and turn off the gas burners so that it does not burn.
A window lace curtain, in which a parrot runs the risk of getting tangled in claws, can become a common catching net. Remove dangerous objects and remove other pets from the room, if any.
Women and children are trusted more
Not all types of parakeets have a tendency to imitate human words. If you have a Chinese variety, or you have a Cramer necklace, you will definitely speak. Parrots of such species as Alexandria and pink-breasted can remember a couple of dozen words. You only need to try very well.
Take the bird in your hand, bring it to your face and say a few times clearly and chant the word that will be the first. It can be your name or the name of the parrot itself. There is one secret – necklace parrots make contact with children or women more easily. Repeat classes several times a day, and after two weeks your pet will definitely speak. You can learn several words at the same time. It is desirable that they contain the letters: A, O, K, P, T. The most talented are able to remember up to 100 words.
Among the diseases of parakeets, we note smallpox. This dangerous infectious disease leads to death. The main signs: white tongue, decreased activity, refusal to eat.
Psittacosis (ornithosis) is dangerous not only for the parakeet, but also for people. He indulges in a litter. Signs: mucous discharge from cloaca and swelling of the eyes.
Goiter can become inflamed due to the use of poor-quality food. If the pet sits "pouting", does not eat, the goiter is greatly enlarged, vomits with whole grains, which means that he is sick.
Salmonella disease can also result in the death of a pet. This infection can be caught through the shell of the eggs, if it is not sufficiently processed. The first sign of infection is diarrhea, which leads to dehydration.
For all of the above symptoms, show your parrot to your veterinarian right away.
If your goal is breeding necklace parrots, then you will have to pick up the appropriate pairs. They are compiled once and for all, that is, in captivity, the male and female can live together for up to 30 years.
Breeding necklaces is not easy. When choosing a couple, consider the age – pets must be at least three years old – the age of puberty. Having set them in a separate cage, install a special nest box with a bottom size of 25×35 cm and a height of 40 cm. Pour sawdust onto the bottom. Letok should be 8-10 cm in diameter.
Parrots examine the box, and after a while the female will lay eggs there. It will incubate for about three weeks, and the male will feed it at this time.
Usually there are 3-4 chicks who are ready to eat right after birth. At first, only the mother feeds them, later the father also connects. After three to four months, small parrots no longer need parents.
You should also improve the air condition in the room. The easiest way to use an air purifier. And it is better to monitor humidity (at least 40%) and temperature (at least 20 degrees Celsius) with the help of special devices.
