How to choose a parrot
First of all, you should decide whether to purchase overseas parrots or domestic birds.
Parrots are especially preferred. It is important to make the right choice, because there are many varieties that differ greatly in behavior and life expectancy.
Large species, as a rule, capricious, harmful, masterful, in terms of development correspond to a 3-year-old child. They become attached to a specific person and remain faithful to him until the end of his life, and when a person dies (some large parrot species live up to 70 years, in particular, cockatoos), the bird experiences great stress: it is very likely that it will close, will not utter a word, it plucks itself, sometimes it can amputate its legs. In fact, such parrots fall in love with a person, feel jealousy, drive away strangers if they suspect that someone is trying to “recapture” their owner. In addition, large species are very demanding to care for: the cage is only suitable for a certain size, and the bird does not like to be there anyway, preferring to walk around the apartment. In a hooligan mood, a parrot can spoil furniture and household items, causing significant damage to them. Large parrots are not cheap: some species are estimated at 100 thousand rubles or more.
Probably the best option for inexperienced poultry farmers would be a wavy parrot, which is much easier to keep, and the satisfaction from communicating with it is not much less than with large parrots. Budgerigars are quite smart, although, of course, not as susceptible to human speech as their more temperamental large colleagues. According to popular belief, males are better at speaking. The opinion is erroneous – females are just lazier. The peculiarity of small species is that they pronounce words indistinctly, therefore usually only the owner can understand them. In any case, for mastering the speech skills of parrots, normal conditions are required, and the arrangement of the cell plays a paramount role in this.
When choosing to distinguish a male from a female, it is not difficult: in the first case, the cornea of the beak is blue-violet, and in the second, pink. You should not buy a sedentary bird with poor plumage, overfed, not showing interest in the outside world, at the age of more than one and a half months. By nature, budgies are sociable, they like to naughty, tease the owner. If something is forbidden to them, then they will do it on purpose, following the reaction of the person. And the owner is forbidden to shout, scold, chase a parrot in order not to scare him.
There are lovers who choose less exotic birds for home keeping. These are, for example, those who want to have a piece of their native nature at home (you can save money by catching a songbird on your own) and enjoy singing. Unpretentious pichugs will not contain labor, and they can become attached to a person.
To choose the right bird in all this diversity, you must first learn in detail about the features of a particular species, conditions of detention, prepare the cage and feed in advance.
The male is better suited for the role of a home singer, as females usually do not sing. It is not necessary to acquire representatives of both sexes in order to save them from boredom, because in most species “love” appears only for short periods of time, once a year, moreover, in captivity, birds usually do not breed. Moreover, they will quarrel, fight, sing less and it will be more difficult to tame them.
If you put several males in one cage, the consequences can be even worse – even to the death of the weaker one. The ban on cohabitation does not apply to all birds: for example, bullfinches, tap dancing, kings, long-tailed tits feel good in the group.
How to feed a parrot
In order for decorative and songbirds to feel good and to please the owner with their appearance and voice, they need good nutrition, which they give at certain hours. The volumes of feed consumed by the bird are calculated by trial and error taking into account the physiological and biological specifics of the bird.
The approximate composition of the grain mixture is as follows: small millet – 3 parts, canary seed – 2 parts, oatmeal – 1 part, spring colza – 1 part, rapeseed – 1 part, hemp – 1 part, flax – 1 part, salad – 0, 5 parts.
The average norms of the grain mixture for one bird are: for a budgie – 20 g, for nymphs, rosella and other parrots of the same size – about 35 g, for cockatoos, gray and Amazonian parrots – about 45 g, for canaries, amadins, astrildes – about 13-14 g.
In addition to grain mixtures, the diet should contain: soft and green food for canaries, soft food, fruits, vegetables, insect larvae for parrots, fruit, vegetables, protein food for chaffinch, flour worms, dried insects, eggs for insectivores ants, flies, daphnia.
As a basis for soft feed, you can take carrots and boiled chicken eggs.
Like other animals, birds need mineral fertilizing: crushed shells, boiled eggshells, chalk, slaked lime, salt, sand, and vitamins, the need for which in birds of different species is very different, depending on the conditions of detention and metabolic characteristics . Vitamins are given in the smallest doses, dissolving in water a few drops of multivitamins. If there are too many vitamins, then the bird may die.
The daily norm of water is approximately 85-95 ml.
Before acquiring a parrot, like any bird, the cage should be adequately prepared, equipped with a convenient drinking bowl and feeder. Immediately after the purchase, the parrot will get used to a new place, therefore, in the first day, it may not touch food at all. But some special procedures are not required for accustoming to the feeding trough. It is only necessary to remember that after eating the food should not be removed, since both food and water should always be within the reach of the bird.
Parrots can be learned with some tricks relatively easily. The main quality of a parrot trainer is patience and perseverance.
When approaching the cage, one should not make sudden movements; at every opportunity, one should call the bird by name. She should get used to eating food in the presence of the owner. It will take 7-14 days, and it will be possible to accustom the bird to take food from her hands – they take the most delicious piece for the parrot and pass the cages between the rods. This action is repeated until the parrot gathers its spirits and accepts food. Over time, he will be less and less afraid.
Then the owner may try to insert the whole arm into the cage in order to delicately hint to the bird about the need to move to the arm. As a rule, you can teach a bird to eat with your hand and sit on it quite quickly. When the parrot is on hand, it can be taken out of the cage and continued training, gradually accustoming to fly to the call and sit on the hand.
These birds perceive speech well and can reproduce words, phrases, musical motifs, imitate the voices of animals, do acrobatic numbers (this is good for a cockatoo).
Best of all, if the birds intended for training will be at a young age (budgies should not be more than 60-90 days old). For the period of training the parrot is placed one in a separate room. The trainer must always be the same. Every day, a bird utters words or phrases several times, rewarding a delicacy for some achievements.
First, they teach the simplest words – it is necessary that they contain the vowels A, O, and the consonants – K, P, P, T. After working out simple words and phrases, they move on to more complex ones. Based on practice, it can be concluded that birds are more susceptible to a female voice than to a male voice. If the parrot was able to learn something, then you should constantly communicate with him, otherwise he will forget everything.
I must say that it is quite difficult to train parrots. Here, the teacher is required certain character traits, but a ridiculous bird’s reprimand and touching communication will be a good reward for the work.
How to train a parrot in a tray
To teach the bird to the toilet, family members agree on a uniform team for this case (it must always be pronounced with the same intonation). The team is selected short, which is difficult to confuse with another, sonorous, not like a similar command for other pets. You can just say "Go to the tray." It is recommended that you select a person who will first be responsible for training the bird until it realizes what is required of it. When a bird wants to defecate, it will behave in a specific way, and the signs of such behavior need to be tracked and remembered. As a rule, many species of birds prefer to go to the toilet in the morning after eating, although they can do it at the moment when they are put in a cage or taken out of it. Signs of an approaching event may be squats, retreats.
When they appear, the owner must take the bird and hold it over a tray, newspaper, plate, so that an associative relationship is established between the subject and the desire of the bird. It should be noted that for a bird any object of this type will be considered a toilet, i.e. any newspaper in the house or a plate can become a goal. The bird is kept above the tray, the team is told, and in case of a favorable outcome, praise, stroke, give a treat. You can take your favorite bird dish and give it only when it successfully goes to the toilet on command. The operation of accustoming to the tray is repeated many times, until the entire sequence of actions is fully understood. If something did not work out, you should not scold and despair, since a negative reaction is extremely undesirable.
In principle, many birds can be accustomed to the toilet in a certain place of the cage, but learning what to sometimes tolerate is somewhat more difficult. The way out of the situation is as follows: a bird that walks free for more than 15 minutes must be taken and brought to the tray, accompanied by a team. At first, the bird will be bewildered to clap eyes. Therefore, they let her go, wait another 15 minutes and repeat the procedure. The bird must understand that it is required to return to the cage when there is an incentive to relieve itself. In this sense, parrots are good, who are sometimes trained to speak a command to themselves.
Budgerigars not only have a beautiful appearance and pleasant character, but are also capable of learning and singing. Perhaps these parrots are one of the most popular poultry. In the Latin version of the bird’s name there are the words “wavy”, “singing” and “parrot”. The ancestor of the parrot was a wild parrot from Australia, whose descendants still live there. The length of budgerigars is about 200 mm (more than half of the length falls on the tail), the length of the wing is about 95 mm. The plumage is grassy-green, blue, yellow, the wings and plumage of the upper body and head can be in black and white speck. The bird is distinguished by a slender physique, rather high legs, impressive claws on its paws, adapted for grasping. The thick, massive beak is curved down and serves not only to efficiently cut food, raise objects, but also helps when climbing trees and protecting against enemies. Parrots have excellent color vision and hearing. It is curious that males have feathers on their foreheads that fluoresce if ultraviolet light falls on them – this is an important factor in the mating season, which helps females choose their partners.
Palm Cockatoo. In fact, this name is of a whole genus, but only 1 species of parrots belongs to it. In vivo, they can be found in Australia and on neighboring islands. The color of the birds is black, white, lilac, gray, on the cheeks areas of a different color – most often pink, the beak is awesome, strong, tall, dark. Large sticking crest. The length of adults is approximately 600-650 mm.
In nature, they prefer to settle in the rainforest and savannah with separate groups of trees. Eucalyptus seeds and insect larvae are eaten. Usually they live in families, in the high hollows of old trees. Since the birds are large and also with an unpleasant voice, they require special conditions of detention, they are not very suitable for home, although there are always lovers of exotic. In captivity, they feed on a variety of grain mixtures, fruits and herbs. In addition, nuts and boiled eggs or meat should be regularly added to the diet. Cockatoo enjoys chewing fresh twigs. The bird cage should be strong enough, preferably all-metal, with rods with a diameter of about 5 mm.
